TCM tips for a deeper sleep

20/03/2026

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, deep sleep is the result of a calm Shen (mind) and a harmonious interaction between the Heart and Kidneys, with sufficient Yin to anchor the Yang during the night.

Below you will find practical, achievable TCM tips that you can put into practice straight away.

Calm the ‘Shen’ before bedtime

In TCM, the Heart is the seat of the mind (Shen). A restless Shen = shallow sleep.

What helps:Why it works:

  • warm foot bath with lavender
  • dimmed lights 1 hour before bed
  • light, calm breathing (e.g. 4 counts in – 6 counts out)
  • avoiding stimuli such as screens, work or arguments

It brings the Yang down to the Kidneys, allowing the Shen to ‘settle’.

Strengthens Kidney Yin (essential for deep sleep)

A deficiency of Yin leads to waking up at night, palpitations, a feeling of heat or restlessness.

Foods that nourish Yin:

  • sesame seeds (black),
  • blackcurrants and blueberries
  • almonds, walnuts
  • avocado, courgette
  • steamed, soft dishes
  • gentle stews
  • mild broths

Take a Chinese herbal formula that strengthens Kidney Yin:

  • Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan
  • Zuo Gui Wan
  • Liu Wei Di Huang Wan

Relax the Liver before bedtime

Liver Qi stagnation causes worrying, waking up around 3 am and restless dreams.

Help your Liver to relax:

  • gentle stretching of the flanks & hips
  • a short evening walk
  • avoid intense emotions
  • avoid heated discussions or frustrations late in the evening

take relaxing Chinese herbal formulas during the day, such as Huo Yu Xiao Yao san

and, towards the evening, typical calming herbal formulas such as An Mian Pian, Suan zao Ren tang

Regulate breathing and Qi

Restless breathing = Restless Qi = Restless sleep.

Simple TCM abdominal breathing exercise (3 mins):Focus mainly on the long exhalation: this calms the Heart.

  1. Sit upright.
  2. Breathe in for 4 counts.
  3. Breathe out for 6–8 counts.
  4. Repeat 10 times.

Choose sleep-promoting TCM foods in the evening

Light, warm and easily digestible foods support the Yin.

Ideas for a TCM-friendly evening meal:

  • miso soup with vegetables
  • stewed pumpkin or sweet potato
  • oatmeal porridge with almonds
  • sweet rice porridge
  • chrysanthemum tea
  • light vegetables: celery, green leafy vegetables

Avoid:

cold food, raw vegetables, lots of sugar, alcohol, heavy meals after 8 pm.
